About the Event:
Following our conversations from the vAMM in July about systemic racism and how it shows up within NTL, we (Janie Payne and Claire Halverson), Co-Stewards of the Social Justice Hub, stepped up to say the Hub would address these issues.
Too often in the history of NTL these conversations have not led to change. To that end, the Change Leadership Team was formed and has been meeting regularly. CLT Team members are - Janie Payne, Claire Halverson, Ana Elsa Viles, Julian Walker, Tip Fallon, Patricia Bidol Padva, Cathy Royal, John Carter, Michael Ciszewski, and Richard Solomon. The CLT has drafted our charge which the Board has endorsed.
Can you hear me now? - Identifying and eliminating structures, processes, systems, and behaviors at all levels of NTL-internal and external that perpetuate systemic racism.
We have asked Helen Turnbull to form a Winter Conference Planning Team to work in close collaboration with the CLT to create a design for the 3 days in January that will allow us to realize this goal by making space for us to take a deeper dive. We want to generate authentic and courageous conversations that uncover how Privilege, Power, and Difference show up at NTL and ask ourselves honestly how we can arrive at healing both individually and systemically.
The CLT has identified hoped for-outcomes to involve the larger membership in examining how racism and privilege show up at all levels in NTL and engaging in problem-solving/taking action regarding this.
Social Justice is an integral part of our roots and reason for being as an organization. We ask that every NTL member take time out of their busy schedules to join us.
- Janie Payne and Claire Halverson, Co-Stewards of the Social Justice Hub
